Dakar — On Friday, June 19, the National Assembly of Sénégal, following the Conference of Presidents (CDP), announced a dense legislative calendar. Bills concerning the Labour Code and the Social Security Code are scheduled for committee review on Saturday, June 20, before heading to plenary session on Monday, June 22.
Yet the constitutional revision proposal is drawing the most intense scrutiny. Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, detailed the text to the Bureau members. He disclosed that, as of today, he has received no response from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the obligatory opinion formally submitted to the executive.
Faced with this silence from the presidency, Sonko has set a firm deadline of Monday, June 22. After that date, regardless of the president’s position, the Bureau of the National Assembly will be convened immediately to continue the legislative process. Sonko reiterated his strong determination to have the constitutional revision bill examined and voted on before the close of the current ordinary session.
Additionally, during the meeting the President of the National Assembly reminded that Parliament is still awaiting the tabling of two major financial texts already approved by the Council of Ministers: the amending Finance Bill (LFR) and the Budgetary Orientation Debate document (DOB). The countdown between the legislative and executive branches has now begun.
To be continued…
