A new video, purportedly released by jihadist factions active across the “three borders” zone, claims to document the June 17, 2026 assault on the military installation at Inates, situated within Niger’s western Tillabéry region. This footage has once again brought the precarious security situation in the area into sharp focus.
The visual evidence and accompanying statements from the perpetrators suggest the operation commenced with a barrage of mortar fire directed at the military compound. Attackers then claim to have established an encirclement of the base before launching a full-scale offensive utilizing automatic weapons and grenade launchers, indicative of a meticulously planned operation.
According to the video’s narrative, Nigerien soldiers reportedly offered limited resistance before attempting a retreat. The groups further assert that multiple ambushes had been strategically positioned around the base to thwart any escape attempts or the arrival of potential reinforcements.
However, the figures presented by the jihadist groups remain impossible to verify independently. They claim a death toll of at least 80 Nigerien military personnel, along with the destruction of seven armored vehicles, six pickup trucks, and nine fuel tankers. Additionally, they state to have seized significant materiel, including twenty pickup trucks, eighteen machine guns, a precision rifle, several grenade launchers, three mortars, and substantial quantities of ammunition.
As of now, these claims have not been corroborated by Nigerien authorities or any impartial source. It is a common tactic in such conflicts for armed organizations to leverage their own video productions as propaganda tools. These releases serve to demonstrate their operational capabilities, intimidate adversaries, and bolster recruitment efforts. Consequently, the casualty and equipment figures they disseminate may often be exaggerated or incomplete.
Irrespective of the unverified claims, this latest attack undeniably underscores the persistent deterioration of security across the Tillabéry region. Nigerien forces continue to contend with increasingly sophisticated offensives. Despite strategic adjustments implemented over recent years and enhanced military cooperation with new international partners, armed groups consistently demonstrate their capacity to orchestrate complex assaults against established military positions.
The circulation of this video also carries significant strategic weight. Beyond merely depicting the ferocity of the combat, its primary objective is to project the strength of jihadist groups, undermine the morale of security forces, and send a clear message to all stakeholders involved in the broader counter-insurgency efforts across the Sahel.
