Last day chaos in Ligue 1 matches at Nantes and Nice

Tragic scenes marred the final Ligue 1 fixtures as pitch invasions disrupted two high-profile matches in Nantes and Nice over the weekend.

The concluding fixtures of France’s top football division were overshadowed by unprecedented fan disturbances. Sunday evening witnessed two separate incidents of supporters breaching security barriers during games in Nantes and Nice.

In Nice, organized fan groups clashed with riot police after forcing their way onto the pitch following the final whistle against Metz. However, the situation escalated dramatically in Nantes, where the drama unfolded mid-match.

At the Stade de la Beaujoire, the already relegated FC Nantes saw their season finale against Toulouse cut short by a coordinated pitch invasion. In the 22nd minute, masked supporters stormed the field, prompting an immediate halt to play and forcing players into the locker rooms.

Unacceptable behavior overshadows final whistle

After a 40-minute delay, authorities made the decision to abandon the match entirely—a bitter end for Vahid Halilhodžić, who was concluding his coaching tenure in dramatic fashion.

“This is disgraceful. I wanted to confront the fans directly to tell them to stop. I understand their frustration, but this is beyond unacceptable,” Halilhodžić expressed. “I’ve given everything as a coach and as a person. Unfortunately, the reality is devastating.”

The French Professional Football League has yet to issue an official statement but has launched an investigation. The FC Nantes organization faces severe repercussions, including potential stadium closures and point deductions for next season’s Ligue 2 campaign—a penalty previously imposed on Saint-Étienne in 2020 following similar disturbances.
