The Malian military’s drone operations on Sunday resulted in the deaths of at least ten civilians, many of them young people, as they gathered to celebrate a traditional communal wedding in Téné, a locality in the central region of the country.

The drone attacks targeted Téné, a community nestled within the San region of central Mali. These strikes occurred amidst an extremely volatile security environment, following significant coordinated assaults on April 25th and 26th. These earlier attacks were carried out by jihadists from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, alongside the predominantly Tuareg Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) rebellion.

Across Mali, a significant number of civilians frequently endure retaliatory actions and abuses, whether from the army and its Russian allies or from jihadist groups. These individuals are often accused of collaborating with opposing factions.

A Téné resident, speaking anonymously, shared the profound grief, stating, “Ten of our children were killed by gunfire, the origin of which remains unknown.” They lamented, “What was meant to be a joyous occasion in our village has been transformed into immense sorrow.”

A security official, who chose to remain anonymous, verified the occurrence of the strikes. They explained that “the tragedy unfolded as villagers were making preparations for the second iteration of this traditional collective marriage, a significant cultural event for this community.”

According to this official, the strikes appeared to target “a procession of several motorcycles.”

They further speculated, “This is likely what drew the attention of the drones. There were at least nine fatalities.”

A local elected representative also corroborated the information, confirming approximately ten deaths. “A wedding was scheduled to take place when the drones tragically killed at least ten civilians. This is truly a period of mourning,” the official conveyed.

Security landscape in Mali

Mali finds itself embroiled in an unparalleled security crisis, intensifying since late April following armed group assaults against the ruling junta, which appears increasingly vulnerable.

Since these events, military forces have relinquished control over several areas in the northern part of the nation, including the pivotal city of Kidal. Furthermore, Defense Minister Sadio Camara, a key figure within the junta, has also reportedly been killed.

A road blockade has been established on various strategic routes leading to Bamako since April 30th.

In recent days, jihadists have set ablaze multiple transport and cargo vehicles en route to Bamako.

Early in May, jihadist attacks, claimed by the JNIM, led to dozens of casualties in central Mali.

On April 20th, three civil society organizations, including the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), lodged a complaint with the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The complaint pertains to alleged violations committed within Mali, implicating both the Malian armed forces and their Russian partners.
