A collective representing the descendants of Serigne Touba has formally lodged a complaint against political leader Ousmane Sonko for remarks questioning the integrity of Touba’s financial dealings. The group seeks a thorough investigation to verify the claims, which they argue tarnish the reputation of the holy city and its residents.

The association of Serigne Touba’s descendants submitted a formal complaint on Wednesday at the Dakar High Court against Ousmane Sonko. Registered under case number 12562, the complaint follows statements attributed to the PASTEF leader during last weekend’s inauguration of his party’s headquarters. Sonko reportedly claimed that “dirty money flowed into the holy city of Touba”, sparking outrage among community representatives.

In a joint statement, Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso emphasized that the allegations undermine the dignity, honor, and spiritual legacy of Touba—a city founded on principles of faith, integrity, and justice by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba. They contend that Sonko’s remarks, which cast doubt on the moral fiber of the city, require urgent clarification and potential legal accountability.

The collective has urged the Prosecutor’s Office to launch a comprehensive inquiry to determine the accuracy of the claims and assess any legal repercussions. Their demands include summoning Sonko to explain his statements and present supporting evidence. If the investigation substantiates the allegations, they are requesting charges such as defamation, dissemination of false information, or other applicable offenses under Senegalese law.

This legal move reflects growing tensions between political figures and religious institutions in Senegal, highlighting the sensitivity surrounding public discourse on sacred sites and their governance.
