The initial request from Olympique Lyonnais was contingent upon a specific scenario: their qualification for the UEFA Champions League playoff round. To reach the prestigious group stage of Europe’s premier club competition, the Lyon squad must first successfully navigate the third preliminary round. These crucial matches are scheduled for August 4th or 5th (first leg) and August 11th or 12th (second leg). Should they advance, OL would then participate in the playoffs, the final hurdle before the Champions League proper, with the first leg set for August 18th or 19th and the return leg on August 25th or 26th.
The core issue lies with the scheduling of the inaugural Ligue 1 matchday, slated for August 22nd. This date unfortunately falls directly between the two legs of the potential Champions League playoff tie. It was precisely to circumvent this demanding fixture congestion that Olympique Lyonnais sought a postponement of their away game against Toulouse, believing that a less cluttered calendar would significantly enhance their prospects of securing a coveted spot in the Champions League.
Lyon’s management had also put forward the argument that OL’s participation in the Champions League would yield substantial benefits for French football as a whole.
However, during its meeting this Monday, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) chose to reject this appeal. The league body notably articulated its view that commencing the Ligue 1 season with an already postponed fixture was undesirable, particularly as the entire championship is set to be broadcast on its new dedicated platform.
Consequently, barring any unforeseen alterations to the calendar, Olympique Lyonnais will face a formidable challenge if they reach the Champions League playoffs. They would be required to play a European fixture, followed by their Ligue 1 away match in Toulouse, and then the return leg of their European playoff, all within the demanding span of a single week.
