Mauritania seeks Gabon’s backing for oif secretary-general bid

The islamic republic of Mauritania’s minister of environment and sustainable development, messouda bahama mohamed laghdaf, arrived in Libreville on monday 22 june carrying an official message from president mohamed ould cheikh el ghazouani. She was received by Gabon’s head of state, oligui nguema, to formally present Mauritania’s candidacy for the post of secretary-general of the international organisation of la francophonie (oif).

The candidacy, spearheaded by doctor koumba ba, outlines a strategic project built on three core pillars: coherence, balance, and utility in direct service to member states. The meeting underscored the strong and smooth diplomatic ties between Libreville and Nouakchott. During the exchange, the special envoy reaffirmed Mauritania’s firm desire to deepen bilateral cooperation with Gabon — a relationship historically rooted in solidarity, mutual respect, and ongoing consultation on matters of shared interest.

Minister messouda bahama mohamed laghdaf also took the opportunity to officially present Mauritania’s bid for the oif secretary-general position.

For his part, the gabonese head of state reiterated his unwavering commitment to consensus and collaborative governance — guiding principles of his political approach on the continental stage. Fully in line with the president’s vision, this meeting brings to life the proactive diplomacy Gabon is pursuing.

It highlights the country’s aim to diversify its african partnerships while reaffirming its dedication to a useful, dynamic francophonie that is squarely focused on co-development.
