All eyes are currently fixed on the American continent, where the 2026 World Cup is unfolding. Among those closely watching is Medhi Benatia, who recently concluded a turbulent period with Olympique de Marseille and had hoped to secure a promising international talent for the club.

It was a compelling narrative. Having come through the Marseille academy without ever playing professionally for the first team, Medhi Benatia returned in 2023 with aspirations of building an ambitious project. However, his tenure as sporting director proved short-lived. He departed his position just months after Roberto De Zerbi and Pablo Longoria, following what was described as a challenging season for OM.
Benatia’s continued connection to OM
Despite his official departure, Benatia‘s involvement with OM might not be entirely over. Reports suggest he continues to contribute behind the scenes, particularly regarding a significant transfer saga currently unfolding. This refers to the potential move of Mason Greenwood, who is widely expected to join AS Roma early in the summer transfer window. While an agreement between the player and the Italian club is reportedly in place, the crucial next step involves finalizing terms between the two clubs. This aspect appears more complex, as Marseille is reportedly seeking between 50 and 55 million euros for the English winger.
“I tried to bring him to Marseille, but he was too expensive”
Meanwhile, Medhi Benatia keeps a watchful eye on the 2026 World Cup, where a particular player he once coveted for OM is currently performing. That player is Neil El Aynaoui, a Moroccan international who previously played for Nancy and RC Lens, and is now with AS Roma. Benatia described El Aynaoui as “a very solid player because he combines quality and quantity.” The former Marseille director also expressed his surprise: “I didn’t understand why he played less at Roma than I expected. I had tried to bring him to Marseille, but he was too expensive.”
