Moroccan authorities have taken decisive action to thwart any illegal attempts to cross into the Spanish autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. This follows the emergence of online posts and anonymous messages circulating on social media, calling for a mass border crossing on August 15. The announcement was made by Rachid El Khalfi, spokesperson for Morocco’s Ministry of Interior, during a press briefing in Rabat.

The Interior Ministry confirmed that security forces have already arrested individuals suspected of inciting such acts. These detainees are now undergoing judicial investigation under the supervision of the relevant prosecutor’s office. Authorities emphasized that these calls pose « severe security risks for participants » and constitute criminal offenses under Moroccan law. Both those involved in organizing these online campaigns and individuals attempting to cross will face legal consequences.

Enhanced Security Measures Along Border Zones

The Ministry of Interior stressed that security operations, coordinated by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), are not limited to a specific timeline but represent a permanent and continuous surveillance system along the borders with Ceuta and Melilla. These measures are continuously adapted based on evolving threats and ground-level assessments.

Moroccan authorities have called on the public to remain vigilant, avoid falling for misleading calls, and prioritize safety, reminding citizens that combating irregular migration is carried out strictly within the framework of the law.

Call for Bilateral Cooperation on Unaccompanied Minors

The official statement highlighted that addressing irregular migration and human trafficking requires a « shared responsibility » between Morocco and Spain. In this context, the Moroccan Interior Ministry urged Spanish authorities to accelerate the repatriation of unaccompanied minors currently in Ceuta to their families in Morocco. The ministry called on Madrid to overcome administrative and judicial hurdles that delay these returns, always ensuring the best interests of the minors are upheld.

Rabat also reaffirmed the importance of the « immediate repatriation » mechanism, citing its proven effectiveness in previous operations to strengthen border interventions.

Finally, the Ministry of Interior assured that Moroccan authorities will continue to uphold public order and safety with firmness and responsibility, maintaining high levels of preparedness and constant coordination in full compliance with legal provisions.
