Thousands took to the streets of Niamey this Saturday morning to mark the third anniversary of Niger’s Refoundation, commemorating the military’s ascent to power on July 26, 2023.
The crowd’s presence underscored a collective embrace of the CNSP’s mission, seen as a pivotal shift away from thirteen years of governance that critics argue eroded national unity and compromised sovereignty under perceived foreign influence.
«This date symbolizes liberation and hope, a clear departure from decades of governance that failed to serve the people’s interests,» shared Boubacar Kimba Kollo, a local civil society leader, emphasizing the significance of the moment.
The demonstrations also served as a platform to highlight achievements under the new political direction, with many praising strides toward reclaiming national autonomy and resisting external pressures.
«For us, July 26 represents freedom and a new beginning, a shift toward governance that prioritizes our people’s dignity,» noted Abdoulaye Salifou, a participant in the rally.
The mood was one of cautious optimism, with some attendees urging the current authorities to maintain momentum in consolidating reforms and deepening the Refoundation’s goals.
«We’ve made undeniable progress, especially in asserting our sovereignty and rejecting neocolonial interference. Now, it’s about sustaining this momentum,» remarked Moussa Moumouni, another demonstrator.
As celebrations unfolded, attention turned to the road ahead, with hopes pinned on continued progress and the realization of the Refoundation’s broader vision for Niger’s future.
