The 26-year-old’s move was officially announced this morning, marking a significant step in his career after an impressive season in Belgium.
From Belgian league champion to English top-flight
Scherpen leaves Union Saint-Gilloise after helping the club secure both the Croky Cup and the Golden Glove award for most clean sheets in the Belgian Pro League. His departure follows months of speculation, with multiple European clubs reportedly monitoring his progress throughout the season.
A journey of perseverance and growth
The Netherlands international first arrived in England in 2021, signed by Brighton & Hove Albion for five million euros from Ajax. Despite early struggles, he gained valuable experience through loans at KV Ostende, Vitesse Arnhem, and Sturm Graz. His consistent performances caught the attention of Union Saint-Gilloise, which acquired him permanently in the summer of 2025 for around two million euros on a contract lasting until mid-2028.
In his single season with the Belgian side, Scherpen made 43 appearances and kept 21 clean sheets, solidifying his reputation as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the league.
