Sénégal: Ousmane Sonko se veut rassurant, malgré la crise politique avec Bassirou Diomaye Faye

Amidst swirling political uncertainty in Sénégal, questions have emerged regarding the new government’s potential to face a vote of no confidence. While a general policy statement is not legally required, it is a customary practice where the Prime Minister typically seeks parliamentary approval. Deputies also retain the right to initiate a motion independently, requiring the support of one-tenth of their members. However, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko offered a reassuring perspective on the overall situation this past Sunday.
“There is no institutional crisis in Sénégal,” Sonko declared. “This new political configuration in Sénégal has occurred elsewhere without fanfare. The Senegalese people have chosen to entrust executive power to one individual – though we all know through whose influence – and legislative power to another, or to a different group. Certainly, there may be misunderstandings between individuals or political factions. But neither the state of Sénégal, nor its institutions, nor its security, nor its stability are currently at risk.”
Despite this optimistic tone, a political divergence is evident. Analyst Moussa Diaw, however, does not foresee a direct confrontation. “Politically, it would not serve their interests well, especially for Sonko, who would be perceived as an obstructionist,” Diaw explained. “I believe they will avoid such a power struggle and instead foster collaboration, respecting each other’s prerogatives.”
Diaw highlighted several potential areas of disagreement, including the nation’s relationship with the IMF concerning debt, and the ongoing judicial proceedings related to fatalities from past political demonstrations. Internally, the cases of dissident ministers and the continued honorary presidency of Bassirou Diomaye Faye within the party are expected to be resolved by the political bureau. Furthermore, Ousmane Sonko issued a warning against any postponement of the local elections scheduled for January 2027, which represent the next significant test for the Pastef party. No decree has yet been issued to set the date for these elections.
