Legislative leverage fuels rising political tension in Sénégal
The political climate in Sénégal is intensifying as Ousmane Sonko, the leader of Pastef, issues a stern warning to the executive branch. In a recent address, the former Prime Minister signaled a significant shift in his approach toward the current administration, highlighting a deepening rift with the presidential camp.
Highlighting the legislative strength of his party, Ousmane Sonko emphasized that the National Assembly remains a powerful tool at his disposal. He stated clearly that with the parliamentary majority under his influence, he possesses the institutional authority to collapse the government at any moment. According to him, this maneuver could be repeated multiple times if the political situation demanded such drastic measures, illustrating the scale of the power struggle now unfolding between former allies.
Prioritizing national stability over institutional crisis
Despite the aggressive rhetoric, the Pastef leader maintained that his primary objective is not to plunge the nation into chaos. He expressed a desire to protect the stability of Sénégal and ensure the long-term success of his party’s political vision. Sonko reiterated that his focus remains on the implementation of their project, which he intends to see flourish well beyond the 2029 presidential cycle.
“We are not looking to bring the country to a standstill,” he insisted, while simultaneously reaffirming his political ambitions. Sonko clarified that he does not intend to use the National Assembly as a weapon for constant battle against President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. However, he pointed out that the presidential camp has already initiated institutional conflicts, specifically citing recent moves involving the Constitutional Council.

Reflecting on past decisions, the leader noted that current events justify Pastef’s choice to run independently in the last legislative elections rather than joining a broader coalition. This autonomy, he argues, allows the party to maintain its political leverage and total freedom of action within the parliamentary majority today.
