- The Paris Saint-Germain squad is set to face its closest competitor, RC Lens, in a rescheduled Ligue 1 fixture for matchday 29 this Wednesday, May 13.
- This crucial encounter presents the capital club with an opportunity to clinch its fifth consecutive French championship.
Could Paris Saint-Germain be on the path to a remarkable double? Having already secured a place in the Champions League final for the second year in a row, the occupants of the Parc des Princes are now poised to claim their first major trophy of the season this Wednesday, May 13. Dominating the league standings with 73 points, the Parisians travel to confront Lens, who have enjoyed an exceptional season themselves, holding a solid second place with 67 points, in this pivotal rescheduled match of the 29th Ligue 1 round.

The Parisian giants, aiming for their 14th overall title in the competition and a remarkable fifth in succession, stand on the brink of further cementing their place in history. They could become only the third team in the 21st century to mathematically secure the league championship in a direct confrontation with their future runner-up, a feat previously achieved by Lyon in the 2001-2002 season and by PSG themselves in 2017-2018.
Paris set to clinch title with a draw or victory
To lift the trophy as early as this Wednesday, Luis Enrique’s men simply need to avoid defeat. A draw at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, a venue where the northern club has suffered only two losses this season, would be sufficient for them to secure the coveted title. With 74 points, they would become mathematically uncatchable by Lens (who would then have 68 points) before the final matchday, scheduled for Sunday, May 17. Similarly, a victory for Paris would also definitively seal the championship, establishing an even greater points advantage.
Goal difference provides significant advantage
Conversely, for Lens to maintain even a slim glimmer of hope, they must secure a victory on their home turf against a Parisian side currently dealing with several injuries (Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Lee Kang-In, Achraf Hakimi, and Lucas Chevalier are all sidelined). Should Lens emerge victorious, accumulating 70 points, Pierre Sage’s squad – whose coach was recently named Ligue 1’s manager of the year – would narrow the gap to three points behind their opponents. This scenario would theoretically open a possibility for them to draw level on the 38th and final matchday, provided a series of unlikely events, including a PSG loss in the derby against Paris FC.
However, even this improbable scenario is unlikely to prevent Marquinhos and his teammates from securing another title, given their substantial goal difference advantage (+44 compared to Lens’ +29). This crucial factor serves as the tie-breaker in the event of equal points. In essence, even with a defeat, Paris Saint-Germain is highly improbable to relinquish the top spot, unless their rival manages to overcome the significant 15-goal difference separating the two teams.
Parisian coach Luis Enrique was clear on this point following his team’s 1-0 victory against Brest. “We must acknowledge Lens’ performance throughout the season; they have played at an incredible level, making it very challenging for us,” he stated, adding confidently, “but we are already champions, 99.9% of the way.” All eyes will be on Wednesday to see if that percentage officially tips to 100%, or if the wait extends until the final weekend of competition.
