A defining chapter concluded at the Etihad Stadium as Pep Guardiola led Manchester City for his 593rd and final time. A 1-2 defeat to Aston Villa marked the end of an era, but the true legacy was etched in the heartfelt tributes paid to the Catalan tactician.

The atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium was electric this past Sunday afternoon as Manchester City faced Aston Villa in the Premier League’s 38th fixture. This wasn’t just another match—it was Guardiola’s 593rd game in charge of the Sky Blues, a decade after he first took the helm. Over these ten years, he transformed the club into a powerhouse, securing an unprecedented haul of trophies and reshaping English football.

A night of tributes

Before kickoff, the Etihad faithful unveiled three massive tifos celebrating the departing figures of Bernardo Silva and John Stones, alongside Guardiola himself. As Guardiola exchanged handshakes with Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, the home side presented him with a farewell gift, symbolizing his impact on the Premier League.

Semenyo scores the final goal of the Guardiola era

Guardiola, visibly moved, showed his customary focus throughout the match. His composure was evident when City opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, thanks to a deflected corner. Antoine Semenyo, with a first-time volley, put the ball beyond the Aston Villa keeper after Tijjani Reijnders’ delivery was headed on by the unfortunate Andres Garcia (1-0). Guardiola, however, remained stone-faced, betraying no emotion.

Tears for Silva and Stones

Guardiola’s composure gave way to tears when Bernardo Silva (59th minute) and John Stones (78th minute) were substituted. Both players received standing ovations from the Etihad crowd, with haies d’honneur formed by teammates from both sides, acknowledging their immense contributions under Guardiola’s leadership.

Stones struggles in his final appearance

Stones’ last match for City was far from his best. Involved in both goals conceded, the defender inadvertently redirected a corner into his own net (47th minute), allowing Aston Villa to level. Later, he was beaten by Ollie Watkins’ crochet before the striker finished clinically (61st minute), sealing a 1-2 defeat.

City’s dominance in the first half faded after the interval, likely due to the absence of key players (Erling Haaland, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Rodri, and Marc Guéhi were all left out) and the emotional weight of the occasion.

Yet, the result was secondary. Manchester City had already secured second place in the Premier League, and the 55,000 spectators at the Etihad will cherish the emotions over the scoreline.
