Raphaël Edzang, who secured the party presidency on February 21, is set to formally take control of the Rassemblement pour le Gabon (RPG). The handover ceremony will take place this Saturday, June 27, at the party’s central office located in the Petit Paris district of Libreville. This transition marks a significant moment for the political organization established by Paul Mba Abessole.
During his upcoming investiture, the incoming leader will outline his strategic vision and set the trajectory for the party’s future. He is also expected to address critical national issues currently impacting the country.
« The RPG is change, and change is now », is the fresh mantra adopted by the new leadership team replacing Laurent Angué Mezui.
With this slogan, the new party head aims to revitalize the movement. His focus remains on promoting transparency, fostering national development, and aligning the party’s goals more closely with the needs of the Gabonese people.
Furthermore, Raphaël Edzang intends to establish the RPG as a central force in national politics, serving as a primary source of constructive policy proposals.
A professional economist and senior civil servant, Raphaël Edzang was born on October 25, 1970, in Ellelem 1, situated in the Woleu Ntem province. His career includes a notable tenure at the General Directorate of Public Procurement (DGMP), where he managed public contract awards.
His journey with the RPG began in 2009 as a mission officer for the party president. Since then, he has remained a steadfast member, representing the party as a candidate in legislative elections throughout 2011, 2018, 2023, and the upcoming 2025 cycle.
The RPG has a storied history, emerging in the late 1990s from the Rassemblement national des bucherons (RNB) following a split. While it was once a formidable opposition force against the administration of Omar Bongo Ondimba, it eventually transitioned into the presidential majority.
