Regional program on gender and green economy validated in Abidjan

Abidjan — A landmark initiative to bridge gender equality with environmental sustainability has been endorsed in Abidjan. The Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO) Centre for Gender Development (CCDG), in partnership with UN Women and key CEDEAO agencies, officially approved a regional framework that merges gender policies, climate resilience, and the green economy.

The two-day working session held on May 15–16 at the CEDEAO Resident Mission in Côte d’Ivoire culminated in the finalization of this integrated program. Its primary objective is to align regional efforts with member states’ priorities in gender mainstreaming, climate adaptation, and sustainable economic growth, while also catalyzing funds for the CEDEAO Gender and Climate Action Plan.

During the deliberations, Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the CCDG, highlighted how the green transition can unlock both challenges and transformative prospects for women and girls across West Africa. She emphasized the need to ensure their inclusion in decision-making roles and economic spheres linked to environmental stewardship.

Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women’s Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, framed the initiative as a pivotal shift—shifting climate and economic commitments from rhetoric to tangible, on-the-ground actions across the region. She underscored the urgency of translating international pledges into local realities that empower marginalized groups.

Dr. Kalilou Sylla, CEDEAO Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, reiterated the bloc’s commitment to a green transition that leaves no one behind. He stressed the importance of creating real, accessible opportunities for women and youth to participate in and benefit from sustainable economic models.

The finalized program document is slated for adoption during a technical meeting scheduled in Lomé, Togo, from June 29 to July 6, 2026.
