International crime fugitives arrested in Benin with bcn-interpol

Benin steps up fight against transnational criminal networks

In an intensified crackdown on cross-border crime, Benin’s Police républicaine has executed coordinated operations to dismantle criminal fugitive networks exploiting the country as a hiding spot. The BCN-INTERPOL Cotonou unit, alongside judicial police divisions, carried out a week-long campaign from April 13 to 19, 2026, resulting in the capture of three internationally sought suspects.

High-profile arrests expose regional security collaboration

On April 15, a Nigerian national, wanted by Nigerian authorities for alleged involvement in multiple homicide cases in Lagos (2023–2024), was detained in a Cotonou hotel. The fugitive, whose pursuit had gained significant media attention in Lagos State, had been evading capture under the radar until police surveillance led to his arrest.

The same day, an operation at the Bernardin Gantin International Airport resulted in the detention of a suspect wanted by U.S. authorities in a large-scale fraud case. The individual had recently fled the United States and entered Benin in an attempt to avoid prosecution.

A few days later, on April 19, a French national—also sought for alleged ties to transnational organized crime—was arrested in Cotonou. Investigators discovered the man had constructed multiple fake identities to evade detection. Persistent undercover monitoring by specialized units over several weeks ultimately led to his identification and capture.

Extradition and international justice under CEDEAO framework

Following the arrests, the Nigerian suspect was handed over to his home country under the ECOWAS Police Criminal Cooperation Agreement. Meanwhile, legal proceedings for the extradition of the remaining suspects are currently underway, ensuring adherence to international judicial standards.

Through these targeted actions and subsequent transfers, Benin’s law enforcement reaffirms its unwavering stance against transnational crime, reinforces cross-border police collaboration, and sends a clear message: Benin will not serve as a safe haven for fugitives, regardless of their nationality or alleged crimes.
