The National Agency of Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACIM) has issued a warning about hazardous sea conditions affecting Senegal’s coastline. Mariners and coastal residents should exercise extreme caution and adhere strictly to safety protocols until May 16.
What to expect along the Senegalese coast
Starting Tuesday, May 12 at 3:00 AM, dangerous swells from the Northwest could exceed 2.5 meters along the Grande Côte. By Wednesday, May 13 at 1:00 AM, the same conditions are expected to impact the Dakar area.
Wind conditions and timing
The ANACIM forecast indicates strong northerly winds will batter the Grande Côte beginning Monday, May 11 at 11:00 PM, continuing through Wednesday, May 13 at 7:00 AM. Wind gusts may reach speeds of 40 km/h during this period.
Potential impacts and safety measures
The combination of powerful swells and high winds poses significant risks, including:
- Extremely rough seas
- Navigation and fishing disruptions
- Dangerous waves along the coast
- Heightened vulnerability for small boats and fishing vessels
The meteorological authority strongly urges fishermen, maritime workers, and coastal communities to prioritize safety and comply with all issued advisories.
