Sénégal political shake-up as prime minister sonko dismissed

Sénégal’s Leadership Faces Turbulence in Political Transition

The political landscape in Sénégal has entered a phase of heightened uncertainty. On a recent Friday, the Head of State made the decision to relieve Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko of his duties. This move followed a tense exchange between Sonko and lawmakers on the same day.

During the parliamentary session, Ousmane Sonko raised strong objections regarding the management of political funds. However, the recent weeks have witnessed a significant escalation in tensions at the highest echelons of government. Just weeks prior, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye sought to calm speculation about a potential institutional crisis. “He is my Prime Minister. As long as he remains in office, it is because I trust him. The moment that trust fades, he will be replaced,” the Head of State had stated, projecting an image of composure.

Ousmane Sonko’s response came swiftly the following day. Addressing his supporters, the Pastef leader urged them to deepen their commitment to the party’s ideology, emphasizing that it transcends personal ambitions. He described the party’s mission as rooted in sacrifice, selflessness, and dedication to national progress.

Two days after these developments, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appointed Me Abdoulaye Tine as the new Presidential Spokesperson. Tine, who also leads the coalition’s executive board, replaces Ousseynou Ly—a figure previously linked to Ousmane Sonko. Following his dismissal, Ousseynou Ly publicly reaffirmed his loyalty to the Pastef movement.

“My commitment to the transformative vision of Pastef, under the leadership of Ousmane Sonko, remains unwavering. This project, which embodies hope and the ambition for a sovereign, just, and prosperous Sénégal, continues to guide our every action,” Ousseynou Ly declared.

At the heart of the disagreement is the future of the Diomaye Président coalition. While Ousmane Sonko advocates for its dissolution, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye argues for preserving the alliance that secured the 2024 presidential victory.

The political friction unfolds against a backdrop of economic challenges. The nation grapples with slowing economic activity and a public debt nearing 132% of GDP. Sovereign credit ratings have faced repeated downgrades, compounded by tighter access to international markets and pending negotiations with the International Monetary Fund.

This episode appears to signal the gradual unraveling of a decade-long political partnership. Prevented from contesting the 2024 presidential election, Ousmane Sonko endorsed Bassirou Diomaye Faye to lead the Pastef ticket. Faye won decisively in the first round with over 54% of the vote, defeating Amadou Ba, a former Prime Minister under Macky Sall’s administration.
