Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Patriots movement, has publicly criticized the delay in issuing an electoral decree, likening it to recent high-profile dismissals. Speaking to a large crowd in the heart of Ndiambour, he emphasized the president’s authority to act swiftly, noting that the same decree power used to remove officials like Waly Diouf Bodiang from the Port of Dakar and Fadilou Keïta from the Deposit and Consignment Fund should also set the election date without further postponement.
Growing Urgency for Legal Deadlines
The call comes as electoral expert Djibril Gningue warns of a shrinking window for the president to sign the decree before the legal framework becomes unworkable. Sonko, who has consistently opposed any delay since launching his voter card distribution campaign in late July, reinforced his stance during the rally, drawing significant local support.
With no electoral convocation decree issued by the presidency to date, tensions between the executive and legislative branches have intensified, further complicating the electoral process.
