Sonko warns new PM Al Aminou Lo amid political tensions

In a sharp escalation of rhetoric, opposition leader Ousmane Sonko has issued stern warnings to Senegal’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Al Aminou Lo. Speaking to the press, Sonko criticized Lo’s recent public statements, urging him to focus solely on his technocratic role and avoid overstepping political boundaries.

Sonko’s direct challenge to the new leader comes amid rising political tensions in Dakar. The opposition figure, who previously held the Prime Minister’s office, advised Lo to “stick to the numbers” and refrain from commenting on matters outside his technical mandate. “If he claims to be a technocrat, he should limit himself to technocracy,” Sonko declared, emphasizing the need for political restraint.

Accusations of fueling political discord

Sonko went further, alleging that Al Aminou Lo played a significant role in exacerbating tensions between the ruling Pastef party and the President. “We are aware of his involvement in the disputes between Pastef and the Head of State,” Sonko stated. “Until now, we have chosen not to disclose all the details. He should tone down his rhetoric.”

The opposition leader also took issue with Lo’s public remarks during the announcement of the new government lineup. “Yesterday, during the government’s unveiling, I heard him lecturing others. He should start by applying those lessons to himself,” Sonko remarked, dismissing the Prime Minister’s statements as hypocritical.

A veiled threat of undisclosed information

In a particularly pointed statement, Sonko hinted at possessing insider knowledge that has not yet been made public. “We know everything,” he asserted. “We have chosen to remain silent on certain facts, but we will not tolerate further provocation.”

The exchange underscores the deepening rift between Senegal’s political factions, with Sonko positioning himself as a vocal critic of the new administration’s approach.
