Sorbonne university explores partnership with chic in Bénin for medical excellence

The medical and research landscape in West Africa is about to reach a historic milestone. Sorbonne Université, a leading European academic and medical institution, is now turning its attention to Bénin. A high-level delegation from the French establishment, led by its president, visited the Centre Hospitalier International de Calavi (CHIC) to discover this new flagship of Béninese public health.

This highly strategic visit outlines the contours of a promising alliance, aiming to bridge the academic and hospital worlds to elevate healthcare provision and medical training in the sub-region.

A world-class technical platform

Inaugurated to redefine health standards and drastically reduce medical evacuations abroad, the CHIC impressed its guests. Spread over more than 40,000 m² with a capacity of over 430 beds, the center integrates cutting-edge imaging and treatment technologies, particularly in medical oncology, radiotherapy, and complex cardiology.

From the discovery of care units to the medico-technical hub, the European delegation could observe the rigor of facilities meeting the strictest international standards.

“The common ambition is to strengthen excellence in care, training, and research for the benefit of the Béninese and African populations.”

Towards tailored training and cutting-edge research

Beyond a courtesy visit, this meeting marks the beginning of an active exploration phase. The goal is clear: to jointly design specialized training programs that directly address the advanced needs of the CHIC, while building on existing collaborations in Bénin.

By combining Sorbonne Université’s academic expertise with the CHIC’s technological potential, Bénin is not just acquiring a modern hospital; it is sustainably establishing a center of reference and attractiveness for the medicine of tomorrow on the African continent.
