The road to can 2027: complete qualifiers schedule unveiled

The journey towards the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2027 is now becoming clearer, even as the full scope of the main tournament is still taking shape. Before the definitive group compositions are even announced, African national teams have been provided with a precise framework to plan their qualification campaigns. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has outlined the significant windows for the qualifying matches, presenting a calendar that spans several months, culminating in a final phase set to take place in East Africa. This represents a crucial initial insight for participating teams, passionate supporters, and broadcasters, as this particular edition promises to be quite distinctive.

CAN 2027 qualifiers: key dates confirmed

The qualification process for the CAN 2027 initially kicked off with a preliminary round held in March 2026. This stage was specifically designed for nations ranked lower in the FIFA standings. According to CAF, twelve national teams participated in this initial phase, engaging in home-and-away fixtures to determine which sides would advance to the group stage. Higher-ranked teams, conversely, were automatically placed directly into the subsequent qualification rounds. In total, 48 nations are expected to compete in the group stage, organized into twelve distinct groups, each comprising four teams.

The primary schedule for the main qualification phase has now been officially released. The initial two matchdays are slated to be contested between September 21 and October 6, 2026. Following this, a second window is scheduled from November 9 to 17, 2026, which will host the third and fourth matchdays. The final two matchdays, critical for securing berths in the main tournament, are planned for March 22 to 30, 2027. This structured timeline allows national squads to ascertain their qualification prospects well in advance, several months before the grand kickoff of the final tournament.

Preliminary Round, First Leg March 25 to 27, 2026
Preliminary Round, Second Leg March 29 to 31, 2026
Matchdays 1 and 2 September 21 to October 6, 2026
Matchdays 3 and 4 November 9 to 17, 2026
Matchdays 5 and 6 March 22 to 30, 2027

The CAN 2027 will also feature a unique setup, as three host nations are already guaranteed participation in the final tournament. Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda automatically qualify by virtue of being the co-hosts. The competition itself is scheduled to run from June 19 to July 18, 2027, marking the first time these three East African nations have jointly organized the event. This hosting arrangement signifies a significant return of the Africa Cup of Nations to the CECAFA region, decades after the last edition was held in this part of the continent.

However, another significant aspect remains under scrutiny: the official identity of the reigning title holder. CAF controversially stripped Senegal of the 2025 title, awarding it to Morocco following a decision by its appeals committee, citing incidents that occurred during the final. Nevertheless, the Senegalese Football Federation has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) to challenge this ruling and seek the annulment of the sanction. While awaiting the definitive outcome of this matter, the CAN 2027 preparations proceed with its qualification calendar already established, yet shadowed by an unusual symbolic uncertainty surrounding the current African champions.
