As his diplomatic mission in Togo concludes, European Union Ambassador Gwilym Ceri Jones was received by the President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, this Thursday. The occasion provided the diplomat an opportunity to deliver a glowing assessment of a partnership he described as having significantly expanded in both scope and impact.
Following his farewell audience, the European envoy lauded the substantial broadening of the partnership between Brussels and Lomé during his tenure. This collaboration now extends across crucial sectors, including sustainable development, infrastructure, energy, governance, education, and security. He explained that his visit aimed to engage with the Togolese head of state, listen to his perspectives, and provide an updated overview of the ongoing cooperation initiatives.
According to Gwilym Ceri Jones, the European Union Ambassador to Togo, the overall assessment confirms a remarkable strengthening of this partnership, both in its breadth and influence.
Thriving investment programs
The diplomat highlighted the reinforcement of European investment programs in Togo, describing a portfolio that presents numerous opportunities for both Togolese and European private sectors. He believes this momentum is crucial for fostering growth and employment in what are considered strategic fields, including energy, agriculture, and digital technology.
Security and development: an inseparable pairing
The Ambassador also focused on the deepening cooperation in peace and security, which he views as fundamental to any development project. He reiterated that the European Union has intensified its support for the Togolese armed forces, assisting both in counter-terrorism efforts and in enhancing maritime security.
Gwilym Ceri Jones took the opportunity to commend the excellent quality of relations forged between Togo and the European Union, expressing his confidence in the continued progression and strengthening of this partnership beyond his own mandate.
The DCP 2021-2027: a cooperation framework
European initiatives in Togo are guided by the Joint Multi-annual Programming Document (DCP) 2021-2027, which allocates a portfolio of 201 million euros. This framework directs funding towards three primary axes: human development and socio-economic inclusion; sustainable agro-industries and natural resource management; and the consolidation of a peaceful and resilient Togolese society founded on inclusive governance.
A new tripartite mechanism for business
This dynamic cooperation received an additional boost last June with the official launch of a tripartite cooperation mechanism. This initiative brings together the Togolese government, Team Europe, and Eurocham Togo. This permanent consultation framework aims to enhance the business climate, stimulate European investments, and support the economic reforms undertaken by the Togolese government.
It is also designed to channel cooperation towards more tangible outcomes: job creation, private sector development, and the structural transformation of the Togolese economy. These various initiatives, as acknowledged by both parties, underscore the strength of a partnership poised to continue thriving beyond Ambassador Jones’ departure.
