Togo revitalizes national archives for justice and collective memory in Lomé

As government bodies worldwide accelerate their digital transformation, Togo is making a concerted effort to reinstate its national archives at the heart of public administration. In Lomé, experts and officials recently convened for International Archives Day, initiating crucial discussions on how these historical records contribute to safeguarding rights, preserving collective memory, and enhancing public governance.

Archives extend beyond mere historical artifacts; they stand as powerful tools for fostering transparency, ensuring justice, and improving administrative efficiency. These critical aspects formed the core of a dedicated discussion event held on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at the National Library and Archives Directorate (DBAN). The session focused on the compelling theme: « Archives for justice: rights, memory and futures ».

This significant gathering, organized in collaboration with the Togolese Association of Librarians, Archivists, and Documentalists (ATBAD), was part of the global observance of International Archives Day. Its primary objective was to highlight the indispensable role of archival services in protecting the nation’s historical memory, upholding citizens’ rights, and promoting greater transparency within the public sector.

According to Professor Tchangbedji, effective management of documentary resources not only ensures the preservation of the nation’s administrative and historical heritage but also facilitates easier access to information, thereby strengthening the bond of trust between government institutions and their citizens.

The Minister also lauded the significant efforts undertaken by the President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, towards the digital transformation of the administration.
