The University of Datcha is entering a new chapter with the appointment of Professor Essohanam Batchana as its inaugural president. The decision, announced during this week’s cabinet meeting, marks a pivotal step in strengthening Togo’s higher education landscape, particularly in the Plateaux region.
Academic leadership takes shape
Professor Batchana, a distinguished historian specializing in political history and international relations, brings extensive institutional experience to his new role. Previously serving as Director of Academic Affairs and Student Services at the University of Lomé, his deep understanding of academic operations positions him perfectly to guide the fledgling university through its formative years.
Supporting his vision is Professor Kperkouma Walla, a renowned botanist and plant ecologist, who has been named first vice-president. Together, this experienced academic duo will lay the groundwork for the university’s administrative, scientific, and pedagogical foundations.
Addressing pressing education challenges
Established in late 2023, the University of Datcha was created to tackle two critical issues facing Togo’s education system:
- Relieving overcrowded campuses: Ease pressure on existing universities in Lomé and Kara by expanding opportunities in the Plateaux region.
- Boosting local economic growth: Align academic offerings with the region’s economic, social, and cultural needs to foster development.
The university is designed to be forward-looking, prioritizing programs in technology, applied sciences, and vocational training. These fields are chosen to ensure graduates are equipped with skills that meet current and future market demands, bridging the gap between education and employment.
