Mali’s green future takes center stage with youth-led environmental drive
The Bureau of the UNESCO in Mali, represented by Acting Head Mr. Ali-Mohamed Sinane, joined government officials and environmental advocates in Bamako for the official kickoff of the 32nd edition of the national reforestation campaign. This year’s event, held at the Palais des Pionniers on July 26, 2026, was presided over by Prime Minister General Abdoulaye Maïga, standing in for the Head of State.
The ceremony brought together key figures including cabinet members, national institutions, technical and financial partners, civil society organizations, private sector representatives, and youth and women’s associations. Together, they underscored the collective commitment to environmental protection, sustainable resource management, and resilience against climate change impacts.
Youth empowerment drives Mali’s green transition
The 32nd campaign, themed « Youth at the Heart of Environmental Citizenship for a Greener, More Resilient Mali », places young people at the forefront of ecological stewardship. This initiative aligns with Mali’s broader goals of ecosystem restoration, combating desertification, and safeguarding natural resources. Over the upcoming rainy season, organizers aim to plant 21 million seedlings across the country—an ambitious effort to transform Mali into a verdant and climate-resilient nation.
Speaking at the event, the UNESCO delegation highlighted the organization’s dedication to supporting Mali through community awareness campaigns, capacity-building for local actors, and innovative solutions to strengthen ecosystem resilience in the face of environmental and climate challenges.

The reforestation campaign is more than a planting initiative—it’s a national movement fostering environmental education and civic engagement.
