Stronger ties and shared vision for the Sahara
The formal gathering at the Chellah archaeological site in Rabat on June 9 brought together Moroccan and international figures to mark the historic milestone. During his speech, Ambassador Buchan reaffirmed Washington’s backing for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara, calling it a cornerstone for transatlantic cooperation.
“We fully support His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision of turning the Sahara into a hub for transatlantic partnership and opportunity,” he stated. He also reflected on the deep historical roots of U.S.-Morocco relations, emphasizing how these ties, built on trust, are now focused on the next 250 years of shared progress.
Local leaders underscore sahrawi commitment
The photograph shared alongside the ambassador’s message featured key Sahrawi figures:
- Moulay Hamdi Old Errechid, Mayor of Laâyoune
- Ynja El Khattat, President of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab Regional Council
- Sidi Hamdi Oild Errechid, President of the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra Region
These leaders’ attendance at the event signals their active role in fostering stability and economic growth in the region.
The gathering not only commemorated a milestone in American history but also strengthened the bonds between Morocco’s Sahrawi communities and their U.S. partners, setting the stage for future collaboration.
