Willy Mengue calls on Equinoxe TV for balanced coverage of MRC internal debate

Willy Mengue, a leading figure in the opposition to Maurice Kamto’s return as president of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC), has formally requested that Equinoxe Television adjust its information coverage.

The demand for balanced reporting follows Sunday evening’s broadcast of “La Vérité en Face”, where Vice-President Mamadou Mota appeared to discuss the party’s internal situation.

According to Mr. Mengue, this rebalancing is essential to uphold “fairness in news coverage”, “pursuit of journalistic truth”, and “the public’s right to information”.

In an open letter to the CEO of Equinoxe TV, Mr. Mengue stressed: “In the absence of a direct debate between the two factions, it is urgent to grant a substantial right of reply regarding the program ‘La Vérité en Face’ devoted to the contested return of Professor Maurice Kamto as MRC leader. You chose to give the microphone to political ally Mamadou Mota on this important matter; the search for truth demands that you extend the same opportunity to the protesters, whom I represent.”

During Sunday’s program, Mr. Mota defended Mr. Kamto’s resumption of the party presidency, a move that Mr. Mengue officially rejects, describing it as a “fraudulent return”.

Mr. Mengue added: “Equinoxe TV is known as ‘the people’s channel that reports beyond the image.’ Your report on the manipulation of the MRC’s founding texts to facilitate the fraudulent return of a resigned person to the party leadership will be fair and equitable only if this right of reply, which is legally required, is granted. The Cameroonian people are watching how you handle this matter.”
