A series of deadly attacks claims military and civilian lives in northern Burkina Faso

Over two dozen military personnel and civilian auxiliaries killed in northern Burkina Faso attacks

Northern Burkina Faso has been rocked by a series of devastating assaults over the weekend, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 22 soldiers and civilian auxiliaries. These coordinated attacks, attributed to suspected jihadist groups, unfolded on Saturday and Sunday, plunging the region into further instability.

One primary target was a base belonging to a Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) situated in Di, a locality near Dédougou. This installation came under a fierce assault by presumed jihadists on Saturday morning. The engagement led to significant losses, with at least fourteen soldiers from the BIR unit and seven Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), who serve as civilian auxiliaries to the army, losing their lives.

Separately, another brutal attack targeted the town of Solhan. This incident also resulted in numerous fatalities, including a ranking officer. Both weekend incursions underscore the persistent and severe security challenges facing communities across northern Burkina Faso.
