AES-Russia talks in Niamey strengthen regional security and economic ties
Niamey, the capital of Niger, hosted the second round of ministerial consultations between the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and Russia on July 8. The meeting brought together the foreign ministers from all three AES member states—Bakary Yaou Sangaré from Niger, Abdoulaye Diop from Mali, and Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré from Burkina Faso—alongside Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov.
The discussions centered on deepening strategic cooperation across multiple sectors. Malian Foreign Minister Diop highlighted the “fruitful and consistent exchanges between AES and Russia, which have yielded significant outcomes not only in military support but also in economic and trade development, all aligned with a shared diplomatic vision.”
Strengthening counterterrorism and regional stability
The AES ministers emphasized the urgent need to bolster military cooperation to enhance the operational readiness of the AES Joint Force. They also called for stronger economic partnerships to implement the AES Year II Roadmap, aiming to foster sustainable development and security across the region.
Russia reaffirms commitment to Sahel partnership
Speaking in Niamey, Sergei Lavrov underscored Russia’s dedication to a mutually beneficial partnership with the AES. He reiterated Moscow’s unwavering solidarity with the confederal bloc, pledging continued support for both security initiatives and sustainable development programs that directly benefit local populations.
This high-level meeting follows the first AES-Russia consultations held in April 2025 in Moscow, marking a significant step in Russia’s renewed diplomatic engagement across Africa.
