With Robert Lewandowski’s departure, FC Barcelona is swiftly moving to secure his replacement. Multiple reports indicate that the Catalan giants have set their sights on Anthony Gordon.
The talented Newcastle winger, known for his versatility across the front line, including a central role, is expected to be officially announced by both clubs very soon.
An 80 million euro transfer coup
FC Barcelona is wasting no time. Fresh off clinching the league title, the club has already identified and moved for Robert Lewandowski’s successor.
Earlier this week, it emerged that Barcelona’s management reached an agreement with the Magpies for a substantial fee of 80 million euros, plus additional bonuses. This significant development was initially reported and subsequently corroborated by renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Furthermore, the Blaugrana have already finalized personal terms for the 25-year-old English international. Gordon has been a long-term target, with manager Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco championing his acquisition. Both figures are long-standing admirers of the player, who honed his skills at Liverpool’s academy before making his mark at Everton and then excelling at St James’ Park.
On Thursday, Gordon was spotted in Barcelona alongside his agents and family, reportedly to undergo his medical examination. As anticipated, he passed it without any issues.
From a performance perspective, the English forward enjoyed a stellar season with Newcastle, netting 17 goals and providing 5 assists across 46 appearances in all competitions. Notably, he scored 10 goals in just 12 Champions League matches, showcasing his elite potential.
A dynamic profile distinct from Lewandowski
This past season saw Lamine Yamal emerge as the top scorer for the Blaugranas, with Ferran Torres also playing a pivotal role in Hansi Flick’s successful campaign.
Despite his age, the 37-year-old Robert Lewandowski still contributed a remarkable 19 goals in 46 appearances. Anthony Gordon, however, brings a different dimension. While he can operate centrally, he thrives most effectively on the left wing, cutting inside onto his dominant foot.
The chosen profile for the left flank must offer pace, penetrative dribbling, and a high-intensity pressing game, all qualities Gordon possesses in abundance.
Meanwhile, the pursuit of Marcus Rashford presents a more intricate challenge. Barcelona holds a buy-out clause of 30 million euros until June 15, a figure less than Gordon’s transfer fee. However, the primary hurdle remains Rashford’s substantial salary, which poses financial complexities for President Joan Laporta’s administration.
Nevertheless, this does not rule out the possibility of the Manchester United winger gracing the Spanish league next season.
Two potential avenues exist for Rashford: a renegotiated loan agreement or a permanent transfer at a reduced salary. Beyond these two English talents, Barcelona is also reportedly monitoring Julian Alvarez. These significant reinforcements are designed to bolster the squad and ensure their continued dominance in La Liga, following their consecutive title victories this season.
