Bénin and Mali forge a renewed pact of solidarity in Bamako

The President of the Republic of Bénin, Romuald Wadagni, undertook a landmark working visit to Bamako on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. Welcomed by the Malian Head of State, General Assimi Goïta, the Béninese leader laid the groundwork for a significant revitalization of cooperation between Cotonou and Bamako, culminating in the endorsement of strategic resolutions.

This visit sends a powerful message for regional integration. Amidst a rapidly evolving West African landscape, Bénin and Mali have opted for a path of dialogue and mutual strengthening. President Wadagni, accorded full honors at the Koulouba Palace, engaged in extensive discussions with General Assimi Goïta. Both diplomatic offices characterized the encounter as «fraternal and exceptionally productive».

A strengthened economic and commercial bridge

Central to the deliberations was the revitalization of economic exchanges. Recognizing the pivotal role the port of Cotonou plays in supplying Mali, the two heads of state agreed to significantly boost bilateral trade. To formalize these ambitious plans, the immediate reactivation of the Great Joint Bénin-Mali Commission was declared. Its second session is anticipated very soon, aiming to solidify these economic agreements and streamline the free movement of goods and investments.

Security and sovereignty: a united front

Addressing the pressing security challenges impacting the Sahel-Saharan strip and the wider West African region, Cotonou and Bamako have found common ground. A key resolution involves enhancing security coordination to more effectively combat terrorism and organized crime.

Diplomatically, both leaders unequivocally reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the tenets of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs. This stance underscores a shared determination to ensure respect for each nation’s strategic choices on the international stage.

«The destinies of our peoples are intrinsically linked by history. Today, we are charting a new course founded on mutual respect and co-development,» conveyed the Béninese delegation.

Toward a visit by Assimi Goïta to Cotonou

Beyond political and economic considerations, cultural exchange and fostering closer ties between their populations were also high on the agenda. To sustain this renewed momentum, Romuald Wadagni formally extended an invitation to General Assimi Goïta for a state visit to Bénin. The invitation was accepted, with specific dates to be determined through diplomatic channels.

This pivotal meeting in Bamako undeniably signifies a major diplomatic turning point, demonstrating that even amidst regional geopolitical shifts, the foundations of pragmatic cooperation remain firmly established.
