Bénin’s new government charts strategic course, council to meet monthly

Under the stewardship of Romuald Wadagni, identified as the nation’s leader, Bénin’s inaugural Council of Ministers for the 2026-2033 septennate convened on Thursday, May 28, 2026. This pivotal gathering established the core strategic directions for governmental action over the upcoming seven-year period.

During this session, the Beninese president imparted crucial guidance to cabinet members, emphasizing their fundamental duty to uphold the public interest with unwavering rigor, responsibility, and exemplary conduct. Presidential directives underscored that all governmental endeavors must be rooted in principles of sobriety, integrity, solidarity, and accountability, aiming to cultivate stronger trust between the state and its citizens.

Key priorities for this septennate include a resolute campaign against extreme poverty, a concerted effort to diminish social and territorial disparities, and the comprehensive enhancement of national security. The administration is committed to fostering more balanced development by ensuring a more equitable distribution of public investments across the entire national territory.

The initial Council of Ministers also endorsed a revised operational framework for the Executive branch, designed to streamline the coordination of public initiatives and accelerate decision-making processes.

Moving forward, the Council of Ministers will hold its ordinary sessions on the first Wednesday of each month. The Inter-ministerial Committee is scheduled for two monthly meetings, occurring on the first and third Mondays. Cabinet Councils, conversely, will be convened as dictated by the specific requirements of individual ministerial departments.

With this foundational Council session, the Béninese government for the 2026-2033 septennate formally commences its operational phase, guided by a clear roadmap focused on institutional discipline, robust performance, and a dedicated response to societal expectations.
