Boko Haram frees 35 fishermen after 2.7 million FCFA ransom in Cameroon far north

Release of 35 fishermen occurred overnight between Sunday 28 June and Monday 29 June 2026.

The 35 fishermen had been held captive for several days by members of the Islamist sect Boko Haram.

Their release was secured after a ransom of 2.7 million FCFA was paid by their families.

In initial accounts, the freed fishermen said they were detained in the Filin Bado area, one of the hundreds of islands in Lake Chad.

With ransom demands becoming a common tactic, bandits and terrorists are increasingly resorting to kidnappings.
