Boko Haram retreats from Lake Chad after joint military strikes
Breaking news
Militants from the jihadist group Boko Haram have abandoned several of their strongholds on the shores of Lake Chad following coordinated aerial and ground assaults carried out by military forces from Chad, Nigeria, and Niger. Local testimonies and a Nigerian security source confirm the militants fled islands such as Dogon Chukwu, Kangarwa, and Gashakar, often taking refuge in small boats with their families.
Intense airstrikes target militant hideouts
Since Friday, the Chadian armed forces have conducted relentless airstrikes against Boko Haram positions on remote islands scattered across Lake Chad—a vast, marshy expanse shared by Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. Witnesses report that jihadist fighters vacated strategic locations like Dogon Chukwu, Kangarwa, and Gashakar, escaping in small vessels along with their families. Ground clashes have also been documented on Kaukeri Island, long considered a key operational base for the group in the region.
Civilian casualties emerge from military operations
Civilian populations have not been spared in these operations. Dozens of Nigerian fishermen working on islands under Boko Haram control were reportedly killed during the bombardment. Graphic footage verified by local sources shows severely injured victims receiving treatment at a hospital in Bosso, Niger. In this area, fishermen often operate under duress, forced to pay illicit taxes imposed by Boko Haram to access fishing grounds.
Retaliatory strikes follow deadly ambushes
The military campaign comes in response to a series of devastating attacks targeting Chadian troops. Last week, Chad declared three days of national mourning following the deaths of two high-ranking generals in a brutal ambush. Days earlier, an assault on a military base along the lake’s shoreline left at least 24 Chadian soldiers dead. A Nigerian intelligence source reveals that the air strikes were meticulously coordinated among Chad, Nigeria, and Niger, with each nation deploying two fighter jets in the operation.
Persistent insecurity plagues the Lake Chad region
The insurgency waged by Boko Haram and its affiliate, the Islamic State West Africa Province, has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions across the Lake Chad Basin since 2009. With violence escalating in neighboring countries, regional governments have reinvigorated the Multinational Joint Task Force to intensify efforts against armed jihadist factions.
