Burkina Faso junte tightens grip: two muslim groups suspended after outspoken imam’s arrest

The authorities in Burkina Faso have taken decisive action by suspending two prominent Muslim associations for a period of three months. This move follows a wave of tension triggered by the recent detention of a highly influential Islamic cleric, Mohamad Ishaq Kindo.

Government cites public order violations in suspension decisions

In two official decrees issued earlier this week, the Ministry of Territorial Administration announced the immediate suspension of the Coordination of Young Muslims of Burkina Faso for alleged public disorder activities. Additionally, the association As Salam was suspended for operating outside its stated objectives.

Controversial arrest fuels growing dissent

The crackdown coincides with the controversial detention of Imam Mohamad Ishaq Kindo on May 26. The religious leader had openly criticized a proposed legislation aimed at further regulating religious freedoms in a country where Muslims constitute approximately 60% of the population.

Since his arrest, the whereabouts of Imam Kindo remain undisclosed. His supporters have organized multiple protests demanding his release, resulting in a series of detentions among demonstrators.

Regime intensifies control amid security concerns

Since assuming power through a military coup in September 2022, the current leadership under Captain Ibrahim Traoré has significantly tightened restrictions on dissenting voices. Authorities justify these measures as essential to maintaining national stability amid persistent jihadist threats that have plagued Burkina Faso for over a decade.

Over 900 associations affected in recent months

Between April and May alone, authorities have taken action against 811 associations by suspending their activities and dissolving 118 others, primarily citing administrative non-compliance. These sweeping measures have raised concerns among observers about the shrinking space for public freedoms in this Sahelian nation grappling with severe security challenges.
