Burkina Faso’s military regime targets judicial corruption, prosecuting high-ranking magistrates

The administration led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré in Burkina Faso has revealed the uncovering of an extensive network of dishonest officials operating within the Ouagadougou Court of Appeal. These judicial officers, who were apprehended in October, face allegations of accepting payments in exchange for delivering prejudiced rulings.

Significant breakdown in Burkinabe judicial integrity

More than ten senior judicial figures in Burkina Faso, including several chamber presidents, a prosecutor general, and an investigating judge, are currently under investigation for alleged corruption. This information was confirmed by a government statement reviewed on Thursday.

The arrests, which took place throughout October, followed a series of hearings that “exposed a vast network of unethical individuals within the Ouagadougou Court of Appeal,” as stated by Captain Farouk Azaria Sorgho, spokesperson for Korag. Korag is the body responsible for implementing the “progressive popular revolution” advocated by the military government.

Substantial financial implications

The spokesperson further elaborated that “considerable sums of money were exchanged for corrupt acts and undue influence, leading to prejudiced investigations and biased judgments.” A specific case involving ten customs officers, who were later acquitted due to a dismissal, is a primary focus of the inquiry. Korag has labeled this outcome a “judicial charade” and asserts that the decision “undermines the broader fight against corruption.”

Military leadership pledges intensified anti-corruption efforts

Drawing inspiration from the legacy of Thomas Sankara, Captain Traoré’s regime, which assumed power in 2022, has positioned the battle against corruption as a cornerstone of its governance. “We will intensify our efforts in the fight against corruption and ensure accountability for judicial actors,” Captain Sorgho declared, while also criticizing a “profound dysfunction within the justice system.”

The military administration, frequently accused of suppressing critical voices, is striving to demonstrate its resolve in addressing internal misconduct that could otherwise damage its public standing.
