Calm celebrations in Paris after France’s World Cup win over Morocco
Celebrations following France’s 2-0 victory over Morocco in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals were marked by joy and restraint, with authorities reporting minimal disruptions in the Paris region. According to police sources, the festive atmosphere remained largely peaceful throughout the night, though isolated incidents were recorded.
While supporters celebrated in high spirits, a few sporadic incidents were noted, including the lighting of flares in the capital and fireworks in the suburbs. By early Friday morning, a provisional tally indicated that ten individuals had been taken into custody across Paris and its surrounding areas. Three were detained for phone thefts, four for violent acts involving weapons and suspected premeditated violence, and three for discharging fireworks in Seine-Saint-Denis. It remains unclear at this stage how many of these detentions resulted in formal custody.
Minor incident disrupts celebrations in central Paris
A technical issue at the Grand Rex cinema in Paris forced a last-minute cancellation of the match broadcast. Fans quickly dispersed to nearby bars, and after the final whistle, they spilled onto the streets, temporarily obstructing traffic. However, police intervention ensured a swift return to order without further incident.
In the 7th arrondissement, along quai Jacques Chirac, a minor altercation broke out shortly after midnight. A supporter sustained a light stab wound to the hip and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Anticipated risks did not materialise
Despite authorities having identified the match as a high-risk event due to its knockout nature and late kick-off time, the celebrations unfolded with remarkable calm. A security memo had warned of potential public gatherings and the use of pyrotechnics, regardless of the match outcome. Yet the final tally of arrests and disturbances remained far below initial expectations.
