Camwater and UNHCR join forces for lasting water access in Minawao refugee camp

On 30 June 2026, Cameroon Water Utilities (Camwater) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) signed a partnership agreement in Yaoundé. The deal aims to sustainably boost access to clean water for refugees and surrounding host communities, especially in Cameroon’s Far North region.

Camwater and UNHCR are strengthening their collaboration to support vulnerable populations. On Tuesday, 30 June 2026, the two organisations formalised a partnership in Yaoundé dedicated to improving drinking water supply in the Minawao refugee camp area, located in the Far North region.

The agreement was signed by Camwater Director General Dr Blaise Moussa and UNHCR’s Representative in Cameroon, Yvette Muhimpundu. It is part of the ‘Alternative Solutions for Minawao Camp’ project, backed by the European Union, German Cooperation (GIZ) and UNHCR.

Under this agreement, Camwater will provide its technical know-how for designing, building and monitoring water supply infrastructure. Meanwhile, UNHCR will continue its efforts to protect refugees and bolster their resilience, working alongside Cameroonian authorities.

Both institutions aim to enhance living conditions for refugees and host communities, while also tackling challenges posed by population pressure and the sustainable management of water resources.
