Chad and France explore new security cooperation at eurosatory defence fair

At the Eurosatory international defence and security exhibition, Chad’s Minister of Armies, Veterans and War Victims, General Issakha Malloua Djamouss, held talks with his French counterpart, Minister of the Armies Catherine Vautrin. The meeting builds on the political dialogue between President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno of Chad and President Emmanuel Macron of France.

The discussions focused on bilateral relations and future defence and security cooperation. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to respecting each other’s strategic interests and sovereignty, according to Chad’s Ministry of Armies.

The ministers reviewed ways to implement the letter of intent recently signed between Chad and France. They expressed a desire to build a partnership grounded in mutual trust and ongoing dialogue to address contemporary security challenges.

Chad reiterated its dedication to a balanced and mutually beneficial cooperation, essential for regional stability and strengthening the capabilities of the Chadian Armed Forces. Cooperation between the two countries’ air forces is a priority, with avenues including training, intelligence support, and French assistance to improve Chad’s aerial capabilities.

French military officials have indicated an interest in regaining access to the N’Djaména airbase. A French officer noted that this would allow Paris to land or take off aircraft if needed. A Chadian general added that a French presence could help address security threats.

Chadian authorities are seeking closer ties with France, expressing dissatisfaction with security proposals from other partners.
