N’Djamena recently came alive with a vibrant cultural celebration as the Chad National Museum, under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourist Development, Culture, and Handicrafts, hosted its very first Museum Night. This landmark event, held on Monday, May 18, 2026, marked International Museum Day, drawing attention to Chad’s rich cultural heritage.
From 8 PM onwards, a lively and festive atmosphere enveloped the museum grounds. Guests were greeted at the entrance by the National Ballet of Chad, whose captivating traditional dances offered an immediate and colorful immersion into the nation’s profound choreographic legacy.
“It’s truly spectacular to experience traditional Chadian dance through this Museum Night. I’ve just stepped inside to explore the wonders of the National Museum, but I’m already captivated by these artistic displays,” shared Anne Marie-Thérèse, an enthralled visitor.
The nocturnal tour was thoughtfully structured into various sections, allowing attendees to freely explore the permanent exhibition spaces. Visitors engaged with a diverse and interactive program, which included guided demonstrations of art objects, traditional tales passionately narrated by griots and museum guides, documentary screenings highlighting Chad’s tangible and intangible heritage, and a range of artistic performances.
Mbaibaidoh John Innocent, director of the National Ballet, underscored the immense potential of this initiative.
“Our traditional dances are an integral part of our intangible heritage. We adorned the stage with objects our ancestors used daily. This event provides a unique opportunity for the new generation to discover these historically rich artifacts. We sincerely hope that Museum Night can be held at least three times a year, as it is an unparalleled occasion to celebrate and promote our culture.”
The presence of the French Ambassador to Chad and his delegation further highlighted the international interest in efforts to preserve and promote Chad’s cultural heritage, signaling global recognition for these important initiatives.
