Khardiata Tandian’s fate still uncertain in forged signature case
Khardiata Tandian remains behind bars as the court continues its deliberations in the high-profile case involving the alleged falsification of Ousmane Sonko’s signature. The Dakar Criminal Court had initially scheduled a verdict for July 9, 2026, but the judge once again postponed the decision, this time to July 23.
This marks the second adjournment in the case, with the tribunal citing the need to secure the presence of another key figure: Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy, identified as Tandian’s alleged accomplice. His absence during previous proceedings has repeatedly stalled the case, and his testimony is now deemed essential before the court can reach a final ruling.
Legal maneuvering and provisional freedom denied
During this latest hearing, Tandian’s legal team seized the opportunity to file a motion for her provisional release. The defense argued that all procedural documents had already been submitted, making her continued detention unnecessary. They further asserted that there was no risk of witness tampering or evidence tampering, given that Tandian had already been questioned by the court.
The defense also highlighted the prolonged duration of Tandian’s incarceration, now exceeding a year. They contended that the time already served could potentially cover any sentence she might face, while also emphasizing the severe social and familial strain on a mother of one. Despite these compelling arguments, the tribunal ultimately sided with the prosecution.
Prosecution cites public order concerns
The public prosecutor opposed the request, citing concerns over public order and the risk that Tandian might fail to appear for future court dates. The court concurred, concluding that the conditions for provisional release were not met. As a result, Tandian will remain in custody until the next hearing on July 23.
Case hinges on the presence of the alleged accomplice
The case now rests on the upcoming appearance of Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy. His absence was the primary reason for the initial delay, and his presence is now critical for the tribunal to finalize its decision.
