French prime minister begins diplomatic tour in Morocco

Carrying the weight of France’s diplomatic ambitions, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu arrived in Morocco at the head of a high-powered delegation. The group includes over a dozen ministers, most notably Foreign Affairs chief Jean-Noël Barrot and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, marking a significant moment in post-2019 bilateral relations.

Rebuilding bridges: a new chapter in French-Moroccan relations

A landmark intergovernmental meeting is set to take place, the first of its kind between the two nations since 2019. This visit follows an earlier diplomatic stop in Qatar and signals the launch of Lecornu’s overseas engagements since assuming office at Matignon. Multiple working sessions are planned to strengthen economic, political, and security ties between France and Morocco.

Strengthening security ties and addressing critical cases

The agenda also includes a dedicated focus on security cooperation. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez will hold bilateral talks with his Moroccan counterpart, Abdelouafi Laftit, to discuss joint efforts against transnational crime. One of the most pressing topics is the possible extradition of Ismaël Benahmed, a dual Franco-Moroccan national wanted in connection with a 2019 murder investigation in Paris.

Diplomatic thaw and regional implications

Relations between France and Morocco have seen a marked improvement since mid-2024, when President Emmanuel Macron formally acknowledged Morocco’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara. That decision reshaped regional dynamics and intensified diplomatic friction with Algeria, underscoring the strategic importance of this visit in consolidating Franco-Moroccan partnership amid shifting geopolitical currents.
