Gabon secures vice-presidency at UN’s 81st assembly

The Gabonese Republic has been elected as a vice-president during the latest session of the United Nations General Assembly, marking a significant diplomatic milestone. On June 2, 2026, Gabon was chosen alongside 21 other nations to join the executive bureau of the UN’s primary deliberative body—a position the country has not held in nearly a decade.

Gabon’s return to this influential role comes as part of a broader African representation, with five other African nations—Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe—also securing vice-presidential seats. The Gabonese delegation, led by its Permanent Mission to the UN, will formally commence its one-year mandate in September 2026, coinciding with the commencement of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

As a vice-president, Gabon will play a pivotal role in shaping the international legislative agenda, working closely with the assembly’s newly elected president, Khalilur Rahman. The Gabonese representative will oversee critical functions, including chairing plenary sessions—both ordinary and high-level—while steering the UN’s strategic agenda forward.

Gabon’s responsibilities will extend to the influential General Committee of the UN, where it will contribute to the distribution of agenda items, oversee pivotal voting processes on global resolutions, and help manage institutional priorities. This position underscores Gabon’s commitment to advancing key African priorities on the global stage.

In alignment with the vision of Gabon’s Head of State, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, the country will champion critical issues such as sustainable development, climate action, and reforms within the UN’s administrative framework. Gabon’s election reflects its growing influence in international diplomacy and its dedication to fostering multilateral cooperation.
