After decades of steady gains, Gabon’s Human Development Index (HDI) has experienced a worrying decline since 2021. Official data reveals the country slipped from a high human development category in 2020, when the HDI stood at 0.704, to a moderate development ranking in 2021 with an index of 0.693. This reversal exposes the fragility of an economic model long reliant on oil revenue, which has proven too vulnerable to economic and health shocks.
