Senegal flood prevention: prime minister urges ministers to act ahead of rains

SENEGAL – FLOOD PREVENTION

The Prime Minister has directed key ministers to implement urgent measures ahead of the upcoming rainy season. During Wednesday’s Council of Ministers meeting, concrete instructions were issued to ensure proper flood preparedness, according to government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko emphasized the need for immediate action, including updates to local emergency plans, verification of early warning systems, and strengthening communication channels. He also stressed the importance of pre-positioning intervention resources and organizing a cross-ministerial simulation exercise before June 15, 2026.

The Prime Minister highlighted the ongoing preparatory work led by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, which includes clearing drainage networks, inspecting flood control structures, positioning pumps, and finalizing emergency response plans. A collaborative approach across government agencies was strongly encouraged, with the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation taking the lead, supported by the Ministry of the Interior for civil protection and crisis management.
