The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have declared a decisive turnaround in their operations, asserting full control over regions previously targeted by coordinated attacks from the Azawad Liberation Front in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims—an Al-Qaeda affiliate—in central and southern Mali.
In a formal statement, the FAMa detailed ongoing clashes that unfolded Sunday near Anifif, situated 110 kilometers southeast of Kidal, following the arrival of fresh reinforcements sent to bolster the Azawad Liberation Front’s positions.
The military communiqué underscored the resilience of Malian troops, stating: « In the face of these coordinated assaults, our forces maintained relentless combat readiness throughout the day, displaying unwavering discipline and valor. » The statement reaffirmed the army’s « absolute confidence in its capacity to safeguard national sovereignty, protect civilians, and dismantle enemy operations. »
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had earlier asserted control over the Anifif area amid renewed hostilities. He categorically denied reports of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, being killed, insisting the commander remains actively engaged in directing field operations across northern Mali.
