The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a strategic shift in the ongoing conflict, asserting full control over previously contested areas targeted by the Azawad Liberation Front in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims—linked to Al-Qaeda—in central and southern regions.
In a formal statement, the FAMA highlighted sustained clashes on Sunday near Anifif, located in the northeast, approximately 110 kilometers south of Kidal. This escalation followed the arrival of additional fighters and supplies to the Azawad Liberation Front.
« Faced with mounting pressure, our troops demonstrated unwavering resolve, » the military spokesman stated. « They engaged in prolonged, disciplined combat throughout the day, reaffirming their commitment to securing the nation’s sovereignty and protecting civilians. »
The communiqué underscored the army’s « absolute confidence in its ability to dismantle hostile forces, preserve territorial integrity, and safeguard the Malian people. »
The Azawad Liberation Front’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had previously claimed control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also refuted rumors of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, insisting that the commander remains active on the front lines in northern Mali.
